  • Articulate which "Part 1 Future" you believe in most strongly and WHY.
  • 5 mins - Meet with a student who has the same “ideal future” for America's role in the world (Part 1). Write down the reason he or she gives for why they believe in that future most strongly.

  • Pick one of the 10 events/issues that either is an event in a foreign country, or involves the US and their relationship with a foreign country.
  • Read the short summary. Click on and read the article linked to at the end of the summary.
  • Write a short paragraph explaining the issue and any opinion you have about it.

2. What is "American foreign policy?" What does it include?

America’s foreign policy today covers a wide range of functions and issues. It includes:

A. establishing and maintaining diplomatic relations with other countries and international organizations such as the United Nations and the Organization of American States

B. peacekeeping functions such as working with allies to assure regional and international security and arms-control efforts

C. a range of international economic issues including trade, travel, and business

D. foreign aid and disaster relief

E. a leadership role in peacemaking around the globe by trying to negotiate treaties and agreements to end regional conflicts

F. a role in trying to address international economic and environmental problems
