A. Meet with students who have chosen the same option (1-4)
B. Craft an opening statement which does the following (each part must be delivered by a different student:

  • Main Point: Communicates the main belief/POV of your option
  • Policies: Give examples of three policies that your option would support
  • Core Beliefs: Expresses 2 core beliefs of your option
  • Lessons from History: Gives at least one historical example in support of your option

US Perspective – the US wants:

o   Free trade
o   Low tariffs – in China
o   Open markets for foreign products
o   Protection of intellectual property rights/laws
o   Reduction of Chinese subsidies for Chinese companies
o   Believes China violates WTO rules

     Chinese Perspective - China wants:
o   A more restrictive trade policy (more control over prices and products)
o   Higher tariffs on foreign products 
o   Joined WTO in 2001 – becoming more open and cooperative
o   Believes the US also violates WTO rules

Human Rights
