2. China-US Relations Paragraph (Quiz grade)
  • What do you believe to be the three most important issues that influence the relationship between the United States and China?
    • In your paragraph be sure to do the following:
      • Identify 3 issues important to the relationship between the two countries
      • Explains/Analyzes both the US AND Chinese perspectives on these issues
      • Provides at least one quote from the President Obama speech and at least one quote from the President Hu speech. Be sure to analyze the meaning of the quote in your own words.
      • Begins with a topic sentence that identifies the three issues you believe to be most important.
      • Ends with a summation that clearly sums up the main point of the paragraph (3 issues). 
      • Has been proofread and edited for errors

  • Budget deficit
    • Def: when a country spends more than it earns, and must borrow money.
    • Significance: China lends money to the US - owns about 10% of US debt. 
  • Trade Imbalance
    • Def: When a country imports from a country more than it exports to a country
    • Significance: US has a $295 billion trade imbalance/deficit with China
  • Tariff
    • Def: a tax on imported products (to make those products more expensice compared to home made products)
    • Significance: China uses high tariffs to give to advantage to Chinese made products in China.
  • WTO
    • Def: World Trade Organization - sets the rules for global trade
    • Significance: China has been more willing to follow the rules set by the WTO, and be more cooperative.
  • Intellectual Property Laws:
    • Def: the rules for securing and enforcing legal rights to inventions, designs, and artistic works.
    • Significance: The US has pressured the Chinese gov. to enforce stricter IPL
