Agenda for 2/25 and 2/27

1. Final Prep for debate (15 mins)
  • I will create a Google Doc and share it with everyone in your group.
  • Each person/pair then must copy and paste your piece of the debate prep into that document. Be sure to put your name at the beginning of your writing so you get credit for it!
  • Once everyone has copied their work into the document, each person in the group needs to read the entire document.
  • Once you've read the document, you group needs to determine who is going to read the prepared remarks for each section of the debate:
    • Opening Statement
    • Policy Beliefs:
      • economy
      • international security
      • international relations
      • health and environment
      • culture/values
    • Real world example
  • If you are delivering prepared remarks, you must practice reading it out loud at least once.

Agenda for 2/24

1. How ISIS recruits...



2. Preparing to Debate - Today you will be gathering with other students who have chosen the same option as you, to prepare as a group for the debate next class. Each group needs to following:

A. You need to present the viewpoints of your option on the economy, international security, international relations, health and environment, and culture/values. Use your "Options" handout and graphic organizer. Assign a member of your group to become an expert on each of those issues. The expert should write a paragraph that will be read to the class during the debate.

B. You need an Opening Statement that introduces the class to your option. You should also provide an attack against each of the other options. Use the "Options" handout, but be sure to write it in your own words. It should 30 seconds to one minute when read aloud (approx. 1/2-1 page typed).

C. You need two examples from the past when the US took an action that matches with the goals of your option. This will be used as evidence that your option has been successful in the past. You need to write a paragraph that summarizes the event, and explains how/why it supports the views of your option.

2. Go to this news website
  • From the "War and Peace" section, choose an article to read that involves the United States interacting with the outside world (other countries), or involves an event in another country that might eventually involve the United States.
  • After reading the article, answer the following questions in the App of your choice (or handwritten):
    • 1. Summarize the event or issue that is the focus of the article.
    • 2. Explain what the role of the US is in the event.
    • 3. Explain your opinion on this event, and your opinion on any actions taken by the United States.
    • 4. What do you predict will happen with this issue in the future?
  • After answering the questions upload your answers to the eBackpack Assignment "2-12 In-Class Assignment"

3. Open eBackpack "Assignment #5 - Preparing to Debate."
  • Using the materials you received last class on the four "options" complete the "Preparing to Debate."
  • Assignment #5 is due at the start of next class
  • If you were absent last class ask the sub for those materials. Then, go to the blog agenda for 2/5, and complete agenda item #3, and the HW (ebackpack Assignment #4). You should also ask a classmate who was present last class to help explain Assignment #4.

3. Choosing your future foreign policy "Option"

  • Review each of the four options
  • Choose your option. Which of the four options best matches with your top three values from last class?
  • Complete the Graphic Organizer for the option you agree with most strongly, and for the option you disagree with most strongly.

1. The most pressing foreign policy issues for 2015
  • Which of those issues do YOU think is the most "pressing."
  • Why?
  • Upload your note to the eBackpack assignment - "In-Class Assignment - 2-6."
2. Defining Foreign Policy Values

  • With the students at your table, work together to find and write down definitions for each of the 10 foreign policy values.
  • Once you have all ten words defined, upload your completed assignment to "Assignment #2" on eBackpack. Use the "take a photo" option.
  • Label your top 3 values (in terms of importance).
  • Finally, click here to enter your answers from the Foreign Policy Survey into the Google Form version of the survey.
 3. Determining your Foreign Policy Values

  • Meet with any other students who have the same "top #1 value." With the other students, determine the reason you believe that it is the most important value.
  • Be ready to explain your reasoning to the class.
  • As a class, review responses to Part IV of the Survey (human spectrum)

Go to Notability. Create a new subject called "America's Response." Create a new note. Answer the question below in your note. 

1. World Events
  • Choose to read one event from page 1 and one event for page 2, that would you think may impact/involve the United States, or may at some point require a response from America.  
  • Identify the event, and explain why you think it may involve America, and any other thoughts you have on the event.



2.  America’s foreign policy today covers a wide range of functions and issues. It includes:
  • establishing and maintaining diplomatic relations with other countries and international organizations such as the United Nations and the Organization of American States

  • peacekeeping functions such as working with allies to assure regional and international security and arms-control efforts

  • a range of international economic issues including trade, travel, and business

  • foreign aid and disaster relief

  • a leadership role in peacemaking around the globe by trying to negotiate treaties and agreements to end regional conflicts

  • a role in trying to address international economic and environmental problems.

1. From Part IV of the survey, which of the nine actions do you support most strongly (if you could only advocate for one)? Explain your opinion. Be as specific as possible.

2. From Part IV of the survey, which of the nine actions are you most opposed to? Explain your opinion. Be as specific as possible.

3. Give Part IV of the survey to your best friend.  Be sure to ask them about their reasoning for any issues they give "ones" or "fives" to. Analyze any significant similarities or differences in your thinking and theirs.
